You are to redesign the Texas driver license in such a way that the design better serves the information present on the card. Consider what are the most important pieces of information on the card, what information should be grouped together, and what would make for the quickest and most logical read of the most frequently viewed information on the card. You will use your type fundamentals and visual hierarchy skills to do this.
Everything below applies, except that you will work on the project in just one day, and will turn it in before the end of class.
Objective
You will create one design (just the front of the license), but produce two separate licenses with different sets of information. This is to ensure your design is adaptable for different people and amounts of information.
No images are to be used other than the photograph of the driver, and a donor icon if you choose to use an icon rather than using only typography for showing donor status. You may also use the shape of Texas if you like.
Here is a list of some of the possible values of some of the items on the license, in case it helps to determine how the information should be grouped.
Project Specs:
- 3 Colors: Black, Blue (CMYK 93 80 12 2), and Red (CMYK 0 100 97 0) at Full Opacity (No gradients)
- You may use one shade of grey if it helps your layout
- Finished Size: 3.375 x 2.125 Horizontal (unless concept dictates a reason for rotation)
- 2 Pieces Printed at Full Size
- Images and Signatures

Instructions
Step 1
Research and consider what are the most important pieces of information on the license, and the items you believe should be most prominent, what should be grouped together, and document this in your sketch book.
Step 2
Create at least 3 distinct sketches for layout, grouping and laying out the information in different ways. These sketches should be fairly detailed, as you have a limited space to deal with and you need to make sure your sketches translate well. Have these sketches ready to be reviewed by the class after project assignment, so we can decide on a direction together.
Step 3
Build your two licenses (using the same design for both, just with different information) in Illustrator. Gather feedback from instructor and type handling, hierarchy, and your layouts in general and edit your layouts accordingly.
Submission
You will provide digital and physical submissions of your project. For the digital submission, create a folder with your working file(s) and the pdf submission of your file (details & template below), label it [lastname_first-initial_project2] and place it in the drop box by the beginning of class on critique day.
Print the two licenses out at full size, full color on one page using the following template (glossy paper is probably best):
Submission template (You can open this pdf in Illustrator)
- Digital Submission: Working files and pdf submission following the template given
- Physical Submission: Full size color print of your designs, again following template
