Objective
(There are obvious variances from the instructions here based on circumstances, which I will address with you all.)
You will be gathering the content for an article and then designing a spread (or two) using the content of that article. Your content will come from an interview that you conduct with a subject (person) that can provide an interesting prospective and content. The point is to gather interesting information, design your layout in such a way that keeps the reader engaged, and to present your subject in an appropriate manner.
The articles will be compiled into a magazine that is 5.5in x 8.5in, so that will be your page size (and a spread will be 11in x 8.5in). To get a sense of what these profiles will be similar to, look at the Spring 2018 Current and see the interviews there (one is of Jason Boyett).
Specs
- 2 spreads, ending in a way that appears deliberate
- Your choice of size, but a good starting point is pages of 8in x 10.875in
- Approximately 750+ words minimum
- An illustration (can be a stylized or manipulated photo that you take, a drawing, a painting) of the subject. You must produce this.
- At least one pull quote, but more are likely needed
Instructions
Gather Content
First, conduct an interview with the subject of your choice. You can do this in person or via email. If you do it in person, you should ask the subject if you can record the conversation so you can better capture the content. Either way, when asking the subject to participate, ask if someone else has already asked them…we don’t want duplicates.
Lay it Out
Begin to lay out your content in pages of 5.5in x 8.5in, as one or two spreads so you get a feel for how long your article will be and how much space your text will occupy. Also, begin creating your art that will be integrated into the layout and sketching how the layout as a whole will appear, indicating composition and how your pull quotes tie in with your splashy imagery and how the interrupt your page flow.
Have at least 10 sketches of how the entire layout will be done, distinctly different from one another.

Make it Happen
Now that you have your raw materials, integrate your title, imagery, text and at least one pull quote into an engaging layout that is appropriate for the content, and also which displays a proficient handling of type.
In creating your Illustrator version, I recommend creating an 11 x 8.5in artboard, and dropping a guide right down the center at 5.5.
Submission
You will submit your spread(s) both physically and digitally. Your physical submission will be full size, full color prints of your work.
Your digital submission should include your working files (ai, imagery, fonts) and a pdf, placed in a folder labeled [lastname_f-project3] and dropped in the dropbox by the beginning of class. By 12 noon on the due date, in the google drive folder.
