It is important and edifying to know the history of your field, and some of the characters who helped shape that field. As a way of becoming more familiar with some of the industry’s pioneers, you will be conducting short research studies about designers and their contributions to the field, particularly typography.
For each designer:
Use the following template to create a flash card for each designer. The back (informational side) should match and use the same font, size and leading as what I’ve provided. Download Mission Gothic from Lost Type so yours matches (type $0 in the amount for free student usage). You should edit your content so it fits nicely in this space. The front (visual side) should contain a portrait of the designer (created by you) and their name, along with a description of them that you provide based upon your research.
Obviously you must use your own words rather than copy/paste; it’s easy to spot plagiarism.
You will turn in one report every week at the beginning of the second class day of the week, according to the syllabus schedule for a total of 10. Choose from the following:
- Saul Bass
- Paul Rand
- David Carson
- Charles S Anderson
- Neville Brody
- Milton Glaser
- Bradbury Thompson
- Massimo Vignelli
- Fred Woodward
- April Greiman
- Herb Lubalin
- (One designer of your choice)
You do not need to reference your sources, but plagiarism (visual or written) will absolutely not be accepted, and will result in an automatic zero for the assignment.
Drop your assignment in the dropbox as a pdf by the beginning of class on each due date labeled [lastname_f-designer#] with # being changed to the number of the study you are turning in.
You will combine and package these all up together at the end as a separate project/assignment.
Due Dates (Every Thursday)
- Designer 1: Sep 8
- Designer 2: Sep 15
- Designer 3: Sep 22
- Designer 4: Sep 29
- Designer 5: October 6
- Designer 6: October 13
- Designer 7: October 18
- Designer 8: October 25
- Designer 9: Nov 1
- Designer 10: Nov 8
Placing items in the dropbox
In the dock of your computer, there should be an icon or folder called Visual Arts. Click on this; if you’re logged in to the server already, you’ll see some folders pop up, labeled with the names of instructors in the department. If you’re not logged in, you will be printed to log in. Use username: student and password: acva and you should now be logged in. Click on the Visual Arts icon, and click Open in Finder if a finder window doesn’t appear. Now browse to Weathersbee / Type / Dropbox. Place your project in the dropbox by dragging it on top of the drop box folder and letting it go. You will not be able to see in this folder, but this will get the files in, so that I can see them and nobody else can. Be sure and label your files like this: [lastname_f_designer1] using your name and the assignment number which corresponds to that week.
