Designer Studies

It is important and edifying to know the history of your field, and some of the characters who helped shape that field. As a way of becoming more familiar with some of the industry’s pioneers, you will be conducting short research studies about designers and their contributions to the field, particularly typography.

For each report: You are to create a layout which reflects the styles, principles and sensibilities of the designer you have chosen. Your layout should contain 1-2 paragraphs of content, which may either be quotes by or about that designer (in which case you should attribute the designer), or your own summary of what that designer is about and their general approach to design (in which case you must use your own words rather than copy/paste).

As an example, if you were doing a study about David Carson, there is likely to be some skewed, illegible or cropped typography involved.

You will turn in one report every two weeks at the beginning of the second class day of the week, according to the syllabus schedule for a total of 5. Choose from the following:

  • Saul Bass
  • Paul Rand
  • David Carson
  • Charles S Anderson
  • Neville Brody
  • Milton Glaser
  • Bradbury Thompson
  • Massimo Vignelli
  • Fred Woodward
  • April Greiman
  • Herb Lubalin
  • (One designer of your choice)

You do not need to reference your sources, but plagiarism (visual or verbal) will absolutely not be accepted, and will result in an automatic zero for the assignment. Any imagery created must be of your own creation.

Drop your assignment in the dropbox as a pdf by the beginning of class on each due date labeled [lastname_f-designer#] with # being changed to the number of the study you are turning in.
