Objective
Pick an event in Amarillo that is in the future. You will ultimately create a poster for this event – which captures the essence of what the event is about – using only 3 colors and using three basic shapes: circles, rectangles, and equilateral triangles. The composition created by these major shapes, the movement and content they create by the nature of their shapes, should be the driving factor of the poster, as opposed to, for example, using 1000 tiny circles to create a silhoutte.
What you show in your poster should move beyond simply visually illustrating the name of the event. It should address the event as specifically as possible. As an example, if you’re doing a poster for a concert, creating a guitar with circles and rectangles is not enough. Your imagery should address that band and their music specifically.
Explore pattern, contrast, scale and other design principles as way to achieve interest and create content.
Project Specs
- 3 Shapes: Circles, Rectangles, Equilateral Triangles
- 3 Colors. Screens (transparent versions of colors) count as extra colors.
- No gradients
- Shapes may overlap, but when they do, the colors must be multiplied over each other.
- 8″ x 12″, CMYK on white paper
- Title of Event Should be in 34pt Avenir Medium, with its baseline 1.75in from the bottom.
- Date and Time should be in 16pt Avenir Bold, with 50pt of tracking and its baseline 1.25in from the bottom.
- Bonus Spec (Curve ball):
You must include one black and white photograph in your layout. Like the shapes, it must multiply where it overlaps.
Instructions
Sketching
Research and decide on an event, and be sure you understand the goal and mood of the event. Create 15 sketches of different approaches to your layout. This should be intuitive but clear (not scribbled), as I will review them and give feedback based on these. Due 8-27
Building
Begin building your layout in illustrator. Be sure to follow all the specs listed above. When you have built your layout, show it to me and we will discuss issues that need to be resolved or ways it might be improved.
Iterating
Once your layout is intact, create 4 more color variations of your poster, and together we will pick the best version to move forward with.
Submission
Print your poster and have it ready by the beginning of class on the project due date. You will also turn in a press-quality pdf of your poster into the class dropbox labeled [lastname-f-project1].
